Satellite Positioning Performance Assessment for Road Transport

WG2 “Performance assessment methodology”

WG2 is responsible for the positioning terminal performance evaluation. The outcome of the WG2’s activities will be a guidelines document providing discussion on characteristics of three different procedures for testing the performance of a GNSS terminal; testing using real-life measurements, simulators and collect and replay method. The document will also include a review of all the main European test and simulation facilities.

The leader of the Working Group 2 is Dr. Laura Ruotsalainen from the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute, Finland and co-leader Dr. David Bétaille, IFSTTAR, France. The group has attracted around 30 experts; both from academia and industry, and new participants are warmly welcomed.

Three major visions for the work of the WG2 were identified during the first discussions:
1. Development of a neutral way of measuring the performance of positioning terminals
2. Definition of  the relationship between terminal performance and application requirements
3. Generation of a methodology to simulate the suitability of positioning systems for certain applications (degradation models)

Until now, the Working Group has worked on defining the variables and metrics related to the GNSS terminal’s performance and on position solution degradation models. The work continues on the guidelines described above.
